Krause Berry Farm – Langley BC

We recently visited Krause Berry Farm and Estate Winery. Markus was a little under the weather so he stayed behind and Mattias and I (along with Nana) headed out to the farm. This was our first (but not our last!) visit to Krause Berry Farm. We live about 15 minutes drive away, yet we had never been! 2015 is a summer of exploring our own backyard for our family, and we are taking advantage of every opportunity! Berry picking was just one of these!

Mattias and Markus LOVE strawberries, and even though it is much easier to head over to Costco to buy a giant crate for about $4, we thought that eating local and visiting a local farm would be much more fun! We arrived around 9:30 am and the parking lot was already full! We followed what other had done and parked on the road and walked in (I cant be bothered to drive in circles looking for a spot!). On our way in we saw the rows and rows of strawberry plants! Mattias was eager to get into the field and pick some berries!

We grabbed a basket (for sale for $1 or you can bring your own) and picked a row. Because of the early ripening, thanks to an unseasonably warm and dry spring, the berries were a bit smaller than normal. But we didn’t mind; bite sized berries are perfect for my two little boys!

It’s the first weekend in June, and the strawberries are already almost finished for the season. (there will be ever-bearing strawberries later on, but this spring variety was almost done). Maybe that, or the gorgeous sunny weather, accounted for the crowds. WE found ourselves hunting the rows, along with a few hundred other people, for the ripe, red berries. You didn’t need to look far, just move a leaf of two and the soft, juicy berries were uncovered.

We meandered our way through a few rows until the heat got to us! (I had forgotten to bring a drink – mom fail). Then we lined up and were able to get about ½ a basket for only $4! A great deal at $1.75 per lb.

We decided not to stay for waffles (they looked and smelled amazing) because of the heat. But before we left, we headed into the market to take a quick look around. The baking looking and smelt amazing! I highly suggest you save some time to check out the market. If you don’t want to pick your own strawberries, they sell them by the pound. They have an assortment of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as preserves, pies and lots of yummy treats available to purchase. You will also find unique country gifts. Next time we will stay for the waffles too!

A Few Tips:

In prime U-PICK season I suggest getting there early on the weekends or going midweek! The U-PICK opens at 8:30 everyday (but they suggest checking their website for any changes). Besides strawberries, Krause Berry Farm also has raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. We will be back in a few weeks to have our fill of raspberries! Hopefully we will have some time to check out the award-winning berry wines available aswell!

The fields get quite dusty! Don’t wear white! I also suggest brining some water if it is hot and some wipes to wash your hands after! The juicy berries leave their mark on your hands!

What a great family activity! Healthy and fun all at the same time. Just goes to show you don’t need to spend a massive amount of money or do anything complicated for the kids to have a great experience. Im also very impressed with the amount of strawberries that seem to have found their way into the basket!

I loved to pick fresh berries since I was a child , there are far fewer places to do it near us now but there is nothing that beats a fresh strawberry or blackberry ripened on the plant by the sun. Supermarket fruit is picked early and artificially ripened, the flavour is just not the same
