As someone who travels outside of Canada just about every month, I have paid my fair share of roaming charges. I remember my first trip to Jordan in 2016 when I got the entire package that my cell phone company offered me, so I knew I could call anyone back home or get in touch if I needed to.
Flash forward a few years and I no longer worry about the big emergencies, but rather the convenience of being connected to 5G all the time! I use Google Maps constantly. I do not know what I would have done without them in Tokyo in the spring! Every single time we left the hotel we used Google Maps to find the right train to get us where we wanted to go.
I also like the convenience of scrolling facebook, chatting with friends and of course, sharing my travels with you, my readers. While I know that there are still a few vacationers who truly want to disconnect on their vacation, most of us want to be able to share that vacation easily!

I used to get a physical sim card every time I went to a new country. I would pop out mine from home (and put it somewhere safe because it is so tiny and I was always jetlagged I often forgot where that safe place was HA). It often takes upwards of 30 minutes at the sim shop as your passport is required to get many of the short term traveler style plans. And then, when the data runs out, you need to find a place to refill it.
It got very inconvenient.
When I found out I can get a single SIM card or e-SIM for calling and data in 85 countries, I had to stop and take a look. If you are still reading, you, like me, must also be interested in staying connected without those horrible Canadian (and American) roaming fees.
Fonus moblie is CHEAPER than my Canadian cell phone plan, which wants to charge me over $10 a day when I leave Canada. AND I get unlimited data and calling in so many places that I travel to!
It really was a no brainer to switch to them! I even ported my existing number! Now I can change my voicemail message saying I am out o the country and I can still get calls while I travel! (That was the huge downside of travel e-sims – not having my phone number from home available for calls)
So let me get into the details!
How much does Fonus Mobile Cost?
Fonus mobile has three different plans depending on how much data you typically use. It starts at USD20 (which is about CAD27) a month! I pay double that just to make calls and have data in Canada. This offers 5G of data (which is fine for those who do not stream a lot). Plans go up from there.

So which would I pick? Well for me it is easy. I personally NEVER go through 20 GB of data at home, but I often have good internet either at home or at a friend’s place or even in the hockey rink when I am watching my kids play hockey! But when traveling, I do not always know where I will get good data. Sometimes even hotels do not have good wifi in some areas. And because I want to be connected, cmon you know I’m scrolling before bed, I will use my phone data. So the World Unlimited Plus is the perfect plan for me. If you like to consume a lot of video, you might like the World Unlimited Max which is probably still cheaper than your Canadian based phone provider (and maybe cheaper for you Americans too!)
