I’m a single mom and have been traveling with my two boys for more than a decade, from toddlers and preschoolers right through to traveling with teens. Together, we’ve explored destinations around the world, from Canada and the USA to New Zealand, Vietnam, Jordan, France and Costa Rica.
We’ve done all-inclusive resorts and big cities, but we’ve also stayed in rural communities, sought out local experiences and planned trips around everything from major sporting events to food, culture, and outdoor adventure. After years of traveling with my sons at different ages and with different interests, I’ve learned a lot about what makes a mother-son trip actually enjoyable for both of you.
The mother-son trip ideas below are all places I’ve personally traveled with one or both of my boys. These aren’t destinations I think would be good for a mother-son vacation, they’re trips we’ve actually taken together, including what we loved, what worked for us and why I’d recommend them to other moms traveling with their sons.
Best adventure mother-son trips
- Costa Rica
- El Salvador
- Banff, Canada
- Jordan
- Tofino, Canada
El Salvador
El Salvador offers surfing, hiking, and unique food experiences for families looking for an active holiday! Spend an afternoon on the famous rainbow slides or take a surf lesson or summit a volcano! Its a perfect active trip for families. I will say that tourism in El Salvador is definitely emerging after years of unrest in the country, and a little Spanish was very helpful! Expect emerging tourist products for foreigners but an incredibly warm welcome and genuine happiness to share their country with visitors.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of my favorite mother-son trip destinations because it makes it so easy to add adventure in a country used to welcoming English-speaking visitors. We’ve zip-lined through the rainforest, spotted monkeys and sloths, spent time at the beach and explored some of the country’s incredible natural landscapes. It is the kind of trip that has something for all ages. There is beaches, hiking, wildlife watching, horseback riding or trying something a little outside your comfort zone. You can make the trip as adventurous or as relaxed as you want, and for us, that combination of nature, adventure and downtime is exactly what makes Costa Rica such a great place to travel.

Banff, Canada
Banff is a great mother-son trip if you both love being outdoors, and you don’t need to be serious hikers to enjoy it. Some of our best moments were a bike ride and paddling Lake Louise. There is enough adventure to keep active kids and teens interested, but you can balance it with an afternoon souvenir shopping, a good meal or an afternoon at a resort pool. I am luckyy to call Canada home and always reccomend Banff for those who want adventure, incredible scenery and plenty of time outdoors together.

Jordan
It’s no secret that Jordan is one of my favorite places in the world. I’ve been close to a dozen times (yes, all the way from Canada), including several trips with my boys. It’s a place I never tire of because of the warm hospitality, the epic experiences and those underrated moments that end up being some of the most memorable.
For my boys, Wadi Rum is the standout. There is something about bouncing across the desert in the back of a 4×4, scrambling up rocks, drinking Bedouin tea and watching the sun set over the red sand that is hard to beat. But what makes Jordan such a great mother-son trip is how much variety you can pack into one vacation. There’s the grandeur of walking through the Siq and seeing Petra appear in front of you, floating together in the Dead Sea and then heading south to Aqaba and Ayla for beaches, water activities, restaurants and entertainment.
And then there’s the food. Jordan is a destination where eating becomes part of the experience, whether you’re grabbing falafel and hummus in Amman, trying mansaf for the first time or finishing the night with warm knafeh. Jordan gives you adventure and history, but also plenty of fun and moments of downtime. After several trips with my own boys, it remains welcoming, safe and one of my favorite places to recommend for a mother-son trip.

Tofino, Canada
Tofino is one of my favorite mother-son trips in Canada because it combines the outdoors with something pretty unique in BC – surfing! We’ve spent our days hiking through the rainforest, playing in tide pools on sandy beaches, storm watching, eating great food, shopping and enjoying the West Coast vibes.
If your son is up for an adventure, book a surf lesson. Tofino is Canada’s surf capital, and getting into the Pacific together is one of those experiences you’ll talk about long after the trip is over. You can also kayak, take a wildlife tour, explore the beaches or simply slow down around a campfire at the end of the day. And don’t underestimate Tofino’s food scene and make sure to make reservations for dinner if you are visiting in the summer!

Best city trips

Tampa, Florida
Tampa was a stand-out city break for Mattias. We visited to see a hockey game, and timed it right to catch the Toronto Blue Jays spring training against the Yankees. It was great to be watching baseball and hockey in shorts in March! Something we do not get here in Vancouver!
What surprised me most about Tampa with teen boys was how easy the city felt. Between professional sports, walkable areas, good food, and waterfront hangout spots, it felt much more engaging for older kids in an approachable and uncrowded way.

Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh surprised me as one of the best mother-son trips we’ve taken, especially if you have a sports-loving tween or teen. The trip was built around sports, catching both a Pittsburgh Penguins game and the home opener of the Pittsburgh Pirates. There was plenty to do beyond the stadiums. We explored the city, ate our way through some great local spots and discovered just how much Pittsburgh has to offer on a mother-son city break! It’s compact, easy to navigate and has the right mix of sports, food and activities to keep a teen interested.

Mexico City
Mexico City is a fantastic mother-son trip if you want a mix of food, culture and experiences that feel a little different. It’s quite accessible from many airports which is perfect for a weekend trip.
One of our favorite ways to explore was on a biking food tour, combining two things boys love – being active and eating! If you can time your visit for a Sunday, Mexico City is especially fun to explore by bike. During the city’s Muévete en Bici program, major streets and avenues are opened to cyclists, runners and pedestrians from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on most Sundays, including sections of Paseo de la Reforma.
We also went to Lucha Libre, which is loud, colourful, completely over-the-top and such a fun experience to share with a tween or teen. Check for the family nights that have earlier start times!
Beyond biking and wrestling, there is so much to do in Mexico City with boys: eat your way through taco stands and markets, wander colourful neighbourhoods, visit museums, explore Chapultepec Park or take a day trip to the pyramids at Teotihuacán. For us, the combination of incredible food, history and activities made Mexico City an easy place to find things we both wanted to do.

Best cultural trips
Japan
Japan was an incredible trip that I took with Mattias in 2024, when he was 12. What made Japan such a great mother-son destination was how easy it was to plan the trip around things he was genuinely excited about. We mixed food tours and anime with temples, Japanese culture and plenty of exploring. There was always something that caught his attention, which makes Japan one of my top picks for a mother-son trip

How to Choose a Mother – Son trip?
After more than a decade of traveling with my boys, I’ve learned that the best mother-son trips aren’t necessarily about choosing the biggest bucket-list destination. They’re about finding a place where you can build the trip around things you both enjoy.
Right now, for my 15-year-old, he loves sports. So picking a city break with a pro sports team appeals to him. It makes it easy to plan a trip around an event, building out from the day of the game. We have flown to Miami to watch Messi play in the MLS. With the three other days, we hit the beach, hit the Everglades and did some shopping. We also went to Pittsburgh to see Sidney Crosby play for the Pittsburgh Penguins and timed it with the home opener of the Pirates so we could do more than one sport in a weekend!
For adventure trips, there is usually one experience that gets us talking about a destination in the first place. Maybe it’s surfing in Costa Rica, hiking in the mountains, ziplining through the jungle or spending the night in the desert in Jordan. I start with that big experience and build the trip around it, based on how much time we have. I’ve also learned not to pack every day with adventure. My boys are much happier when a big hiking, biking or surfing day is balanced with good food, time to relax or something they specifically want to do. The goal isn’t to create the most adventurous itinerary possible; it’s to find an adventure we’ll actually enjoy doing together.
